On these pages are listed supplies provided by Phoenix Obsidian Designs which might potentially be needed by a flintknapper in the pursuit of his/her craft.   Below are some of the tools necessary for pressure reduction work.   This form of Flintknapping is the fine detail work which shapes percussion flakes or blanks into a final formed tool.   Linked pages provide the tools for  Percussion ReductionFlintknapping Kits  of collections of these tools, as well as a  Selection of Flakes  to be used for practicing pressure reduction.   Unfortunately, Larger forms of Tool Rock and Cut Slabs or Blanks are not available through our website.

ADJUSTABLE
PRESSURE-FLAKING
HANDLES

Item #FKS020:   $45.00

This is a unique item which Phoenix Obsidian Designs is pleased to be able to offer.   These handles are of turned oak wood with an embedded brass mechanism which allows you to insert interchangeably, or adjust the length of, one of the pressure flaking bits by twisting an allen wrench screw.   This provides a long-lasting and comfortable alternative to the dowel or other forms of pressure flaking handles.   It also happens to be a close relative of the more traditional handle.   Comes with a complete set of bits, an allen wrench, and a leather carrying jacket.

TRADITIONAL
PRESSURE-FLAKING HANDLE

Item #FKS021:   $30.00

This flintknapping handle is of the traditional style.   It is a piece of wood  (most are oak)  that has been partially split to hold a antler pressure bit.   A length of artificial sinew is provided to lash the handle together to hold the bit in place.   To lengthen the bit, simply release the lashing and relash back into place.   It may be difficult to get the lashing tight enough so the bit doesn't move.   Comes with a set of two antler bits.

PRESSURE FLAKER BITS

Item #FKS002:   $5.00

These bits are cut the length to fit any number of Pressure Flaker Handle options, especially the adjustable handle above.   The copper is useful for any type of pressure flaking since it is a good equivalent to antler but a bit more durable.   The brass works good for notching since it holds its edge longer than copper, like the traditional tooth enamel does.   Meanwhile, the antler bits are perfect for the flintknapper trying to more accurately replicate more traditional techniques.   These bits come in packs of either 2 Copper/2 Brass or 2 antler bits.   Single Tooth enamel bits are now available.

Item #FKS015:   $3.00

ANTLER TIPS

These short antler tips can be used in the hand as a pressure flaking tool.   As the tip wears down the soft central core is exposed so it needs to be sharped to a wedged shaped edge always to one side of the tip.   We offer them currently in two sizes:   3-4 inches or 5-6 inches.   For a longer tip order the Billet Tine on the percussion tool page.

A.   3-4 Inches

FLAKING EDGE
MODIFIER

This essential flintknapping tool is useful for modifying  (dulling)  the edge of a knapped item in preparation for continued flaking activity, both percussion and pressure.   An edge thus modified can subsequently accept the pressure of a flaking handle or the percussion of a hammerstone without collapsing.   Available in either modern material  (which produces less hazardous silica dust)  or a more traditional scoria-type stone.
DEFINITION

A.  Modern Material
(Item #FKS005A):
  $3.00
B.  Traditional Material
(Item #FKS005B):
  $7.00

GROUND COVERS

Thse are thick canvas tarps to cover the area where you are flintknapping, making it easier to clean up.   This is essential for any flintknapping activity for both safety reasons and to protect the archaeological record from modern contamination.   The smaller tarp  (approximately 6' x 9')  works for pressure flaking, whereas for any percussion work the larger tarp is suggested.

(Item #FKS0014A):
  $25.00
B. Large
